Open a large CSV file

Google Sheets stops at 10 million cells and Excel takes a long time with big files. Tidytable opens hundreds of thousands of rows in a second or two, right in your browser, and lets you sort, filter, search and group them straight away.

How to do it

  1. Drop the CSV on the box above. Comma, tab and semicolon files all work, and it works out the encoding.
  2. Scroll through every row. Click a column header to sort, or use Filter and Search.
  3. Use Group, or switch the layout picker to Summary, to see totals and counts without writing a formula.
  4. Download what you’re looking at as a smaller CSV, if you only need part of it.

Questions

How big a file can it open?

Hundreds of thousands of rows open in a second or two. A million rows works on most computers; what limits it is your computer’s memory, not an upload limit.

Does it open Excel files too?

Yes, .xlsx and .xlsm, every sheet as its own table. Older .xls files need to be saved as .xlsx or CSV first.

Will it mess up my numbers, like leading zeros?

No. Values are kept exactly as written, so ZIP codes and IDs keep their leading zeros.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Tidytable reads the file in your browser tab, on your own computer. There’s no server that sees your rows, no account, and nothing to delete afterwards.
