Remove duplicate rows from a CSV or Excel file

Tidytable finds rows that are the same, even when one has an extra space or different capital letters, and shows you which ones before it removes anything. The first copy of each row stays.

How to do it

  1. Drop your file on the box above.
  2. Open Clean up (the broom). If there are duplicates you’ll see “Remove N duplicate rows”, with examples.
  3. Press Remove. The copies go and the first of each stays where it was.
  4. Press Download to save the file without duplicates.

Questions

What counts as a duplicate?

Two rows with the same value in every field. Extra spaces don’t count as a difference, so “Ann Lee” and “Ann Lee” match.

What if rows only look alike, like “Acme Inc” and “ACME Inc.”?

Fix the spellings first: Clean up offers to match up different spellings of the same value. Rows that then match exactly show up as duplicates.

Can I see the duplicates before removing them?

Yes. The suggestion shows examples, and nothing changes until you press Remove. Undo puts them back.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Tidytable reads the file in your browser tab, on your own computer. There’s no server that sees your rows, no account, and nothing to delete afterwards.
